The codered worm version 4 seems to be crashing a number of cisco 677 and 678
routers. We have found a fix that appears to work however it involves a special configuration in your router. If you feel comfortable doing this then the instructions are below. If you don’t feel comfortable, please contact us and we will walk you thru the procedure.
Step 1: connect to the router, either with the light blue com port cable that with the router or via telnet
A: if you have the cable, plug it into your com
port on your PC and into the blue plug on the router
Then start up hyperterminal (start/programs/accessories/communications/hyperterminal)
and set it for whatever com port you plugged the cable into. If it asks, set it
for 38400 bits per
second, and no flow control.
B: If you are using telnet, then just telnet to
the router’s IP address
Step 2: enter your password
Step 3: type the word “enable” and hit enter
Step 4: enter your enable password (probably the same as in step 2)
Step 5: type “set web port 59999” and hit enter
Step 6: type “write” and hit enter
Step 7: type “reboot” and hit enter.
You are done, the router should reboot and the worm should not be able to crash it anymore.
